Sticks, Stones, Sicily & Studio Support

Hello Dear Yogi’s, Wishing you all a wonderful Memorial Day weekend.  My brother, father and grandfather all served in the US Military and our typical way to celebrate has been a big, fat BBQ!  May you enjoy this time with you and yours. As a child I always recited the school yard mantra: “sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me.” As an adult however, I now understand the power of words to bring positive manifestation, to cultivate inner strength and instill confidence, as well as to inflict pain on one another, or ourselves, whether intentionally said, or not. Communication, language and words are a topic that I think about a lot and I am curious about how we communicate, as I am always in search of ways to refine, improve & shift in order to be more effective interpersonally, and, a better team leader & negotiator. I have thought about and analyzed language and words in many settings over the years, but honestly, had never thought about the power of language and words in the yoga class room – beyond alignment cues that is... Specifically, how language and words can be used to bring positive manifestation, to cultivate inner strength and instill confidence, as well as to inflict pain on one another, or ourselves, whether intentionally said, or not.  Or, to increase inclusivity and create a compassionate practice environment, where students of all shapes, sizes, races, genders, and abilities feel welcome and supported. I then began working with Dr. Chelsea Jackson Roberts and began to understand just how important language and words are in the classroom. It’s not about right or wrong, it’s about giving ourselves an opportunity to reflect & refine and to understand that the words we use in the yoga classroom are powerful things. We invite you to join us in having this important conversation, through Chelsea’s new online course with the Yoga Journal, Yoga for Inclusivity.
